YESx1000
Wood, paint, LED lights and sound responsive activator, 4-channel sound, speakers.
Threewalls, Chicago, January - March 2015
This immersive sound installation revolved around the consensual, the hopeful, the tentative and tenuous YES, through an echoing reverberation of layered recordings of the repeated word. Affirmation is ritual. Our digital lives form around the most minute likenesses and passing acknowledgments; a marginal creed of yes-ness permeates our social networks and forms of interactions. But how does the interconnectivity of the isolated potentially re-inscribe that same isolation, by creating platforms of easy approval? Here, the human need to be seen and heard is validated as call – “do you hear me?” – and response – “yes, yes we do.”
YES REMIXED was an evening of performances and movements in response to YESx1000 and featured new work by Danny Giles & Anna Martine Whitehead, Mothergirl, Anthony Romero, Melina Ausikaitis, and Darling Shear. You can read the YES REMIXED Program Notes or watch video documentation of YESx1000 and YES REMIXED below.
INSIDE VOICE was a sound art program I co-curated with Sharmyn Cruz Rivera for the closing reception of YESx1000, focusing on the human voice as both content and form. The works in the program use this human “instrument” as a conduit of connectivity between polarized zones: the intangible and concrete, the personal and political, the intimately fluid and the robotically programmed. Participating artists include Olivia Block, Jaap Blonk, Alessandro Bosetti, Holly Herndon, Alyssa Moxley, Adam Pendleton, Colin Self, and Cauleen Smith.
